Last spring (2007) I noticed that the stage tour of "Phantom of the Opera" was coming to San Diego, and I promised Erin that I would take her to it, even though it was almost a year and a half away. Erin had been playing the piano music, and David & I had seen and enjoyed the show in Indianapolis.I kept checking the tickets for the past year, and in April I was able to buy 3 tickets presale. I remember debating which tickets to get, and David told me to be sure to get good tickets. I bought the tickets and didn't think about it until it was time to go on July 31st.
David & I took Erin out to a nice dinner in the Gaslamp District and then drove over to the theater. David had the tickets, and we went in to sit down. I noticed that David kept walking toward the front of the theater and stopped at the 2nd row. I looked at him and said, "These cannot be our seat." He assured me that they were, and I couldn't believe it. I always buy middle-priced seats and could not believe that we were sitting in the second row of the orchestra!
The show was absolutely amazing, and we had a wonderful time. We brought our opera glasses and didn't even have to use them. We could see every detail on the elaborate costumes and the spit flying out of the performers' mouths. Erin & I kept turning to each other and saying, "This is incredible!" We could feel a wave of heat hit us when they used the pyrotechnics.
That may be the last time we ever sit so close at a show, and there were a few drawbacks to being in the front, but what a great, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It will be something Erin never forgets, but hopefully we haven't spoiled her for future shows.
